If fitting a door knob where knuckles may scrape on the door frame, fit a longer lock or latch to allow more clearance when turning the knob.

We recommend you fit a lock or latch that's at least 76mm long.

The length of the lock or latch determines the distance of the door knob from the edge of the door frame:

e.g a 64mm or 2.5 inch lock/latch will only give a backset of 45mm, a 76mm or 3 inch lock/latch has a backset of 57mm. This means that the centre of your chosen door knob will sit 57mm in from the edge of the door.

FOR STANDARD INTERNAL DOORS THAT YOU SIMPLY WANT TO OPEN & CLOSE:

• As most door knobs are un-sprung, we recommend you select an 'architectural' or 'double sprung' latch.

• 76mm or 3 inch is the popular size.

FOR BATHROOM DOORS THAT REQUIRE A PRIVACY LOCK:

• Fit a bathroom mortice lock or a tubular dead bolt

• The 3 inch or 76mm 'architectural' bathroom lock is the popular choice

• Select a bathroom 'turn & release' to match the style and finish of your chosen door knob, this will operate the privacy bolt within the bathroom lock or tubular dead bolt

• All of our bathroom 'turns & releases' allow emergeny use from the outside with the edge of a coin or something similar.

FOR DOORS THAT YOU WANT TO LOCK WITH A KEY:

• Fit a sash lock or dead lock, you may require an 'insurance rated' lock for doors that lead to the outside.

• The 3 inch or 76mm 'architectural' 3 lever or the 'insurance rated' 5 lever sash locks are the popular choices

• You would also require a pair of 'escutcheons' or 'key hole covers'. Please note that escutcheons are always sold and supplied in singles NOT pairs

• If your fitting a British 'standard' sash lock (these are supplied with long 'chubb' style keys), you will require 'standard profile' escutcheons. 'Euro' & 'oval' profile escutcheons are actually cylinder covers, for European style key cylinders.

IF YOU REQUIRE HINGES:

• Most joiners recommend 3 hinges per door as opposed to 1 pair. This gives a firmer fix to the door frame and can help guard against the potential issues of the door warping, due perhaps to changes in the environment

• For internal doors, the 3 inch ball bearing hinges are the popular choice. Ball bearing hinges provide a very smooth action when opening or closing the door

• For external doors or fire doors, the 4 inch ball bearing hinges are usually recommended

• All of our ball bearing hinges are available in various finishes to match that of your chosen door handles or door knobs
